For the first time since making their debut in 2023, Zimbabwe’s Men’s Senior Netball Team, the Golden Flyers, will miss the Africa Netball Championship set for Nairobi, Kenya from 19 to 26 September due to financial challenges.
It is also the first time Zimbabwe will miss the chance to compete for a continental medal.Netball Zimbabwe confirmed the withdrawal this week, saying the team had been forced out of the tournament despite preparations being at an advanced stage.
“This is not a failure of talent or commitment it is a financial setback that has forced a proud national team to withdraw,” the association said.
The Golden Flyers have been Zimbabwe’s consistent medal winners on the men’s netball stage. They bagged silver on debut in Botswana in 2023 after losing 45-40 to powerhouse South Africa in the final. The team finished second again in 2024 and clinched another silver in 2025.
Beyond the Africa Championship, the Flyers have also brought home medals from other regional tournaments, establishing themselves as ambassadors for the sport in the country.
According to Netball Zimbabwe, funding is needed for a 16-member delegation comprising 12 players and 4 technical officials. The estimated budget stands at USD 16,330, covering USD 10,350 for round-trip flights and USD 6,030 for accommodation and meals.
Although the team has officially withdrawn, the association says there is still a small window for reinstatement if funds are secured urgently.
“The dream must not end here. We call upon corporates, organisations and individuals to stand with the Golden Flyers,” Netball Zimbabwe said.
The association added that support can come in the form of financial assistance, tickets, accommodation, in-kind donations, and long-term .
