ZIFA MOURNS FAN WHO DIED AT NATIONAL SPORTS STADIUM

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has mourned the death of a football fan following an incident at the National Sports Stadium during the AFCON qualifier match between Zimbabwe and Democratic Republic of Congo match.

In a statement released today , ZIFA said the incident happened at Gate 2 on Monday, 28 September.

“On behalf of the Executive Committee, players, technical staff and the entire football family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and friends,” ZIFA said.

The Association said it is working with stakeholders and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to establish what caused the incident.

Several other fans were also injured and ZIFA wished them a speedy recovery.

“The safety and wellbeing of everyone attending football matches remain a priority,” the statement reads.

ZIFA said it is reviewing matchday operations with authorities and stadium stakeholders to strengthen safety measures and ensure justice is served.

“Our thoughts remain with the bereaved family, the injured and everyone affected,” ZIFA added.

The Association did not reveal the name of the deceased fan or the number of injured fans by the time of publishing.
